About the Dentist

Craig Schrager, D.D.S.

Dr. Craig Schrager has been caring for patients in Mammoth Lakes since 1984.

Craig completed his undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Science in Physics, Magna Cum Laude, at the University of Southern California in 1975. His degree in physics has allowed him to evaluate and analyze various technological advancements  high tech dentistry to see what works best for his patients.  He graduated from the U.C.L.A. School of  Dentistry in 1980, a perennial top ten rated dental school based on the Dental Admissions Test and National Dental Boards. He returned to U.C.L.A. as an instructor following completion of his requirements.

He completed a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital in conjunction with the University of Oregon in Portland Oregon in 1981. This program consists of a full year of  advanced  training in the dental specialties of oral surgery, oral medicine, periodontal surgery (gum surgery), endodontics (root canals) and advanced reconstruction involving multiple crowns... This intensive  program  has enabled him to provide treatment to his patients and to minimize referring patients to other dentists out of the area.

While at UCLA, he did research in the field of esthetic dentistry. This turned out to be one of the building blocks for one of the first esthetic dentistry programs.

After his residency program, Craig practiced in Santa Monica, CA for 3 years before moving to Mammoth Lakes in 1984. What started out as the little two chair office on Main Street grew into the successful award winning  Craftsman  style office today on Old Mammoth Road

In order to provide  advanced care in the many  specialty areas of dentistry, Craig takes many more hours of continuing education than are required by the laws of the dental board. He has had hands on training programs in implant placement and surgery, bone grafting, periodontal (gum) surgery, advanced reconstructions, esthetic dentistry, endodontics (root canals) and orthodontics. He has been placing implants surgically since 1992. The ability to place the implants himself as well as restore them with crowns and dentures provides better continuity of care and treatment planning for his patients compared to dentists that can only restore the implants. The knowledge of all these dental specialties gives Craig an advantage in planning which course of treatment is best for the patient compared to other dentists.

Besides  having a license in California, Craig passed the Western Regional Examining Board Test and obtained licenses in Oregon and Arizona. He served on the board of directors of the Western Society of Periodontology and was a member of the American Straight Wire Orthodontic Association. He is Invisalign certified. Craig has been a  member of the California and American Dental Associations since 1980.

Craig has a special license in oral sedation for children and adults. While some dentists say they can provide sedation dentistry, this license allows Craig to provide the deepest oral sedation as allowed by law. He is allowed to provide this deeper sedation because of the extra training he has received to keep the sedation procedures safe. The sedation license is imperative in treating children and providing total family care.

Craig has been a fixture in the community. He served on the Board of Directors of the Southern Mono Health Care District, was a member of the Mono County Search and Rescue team and was president of the Mammoth Lakes Search and Rescue Team. He had been a member of the local Rotary Clubs from 1984 to 2010 and then joined the Mammoth Lakes Lions club since 2010. Craig has been on the staff of Mammoth Hospital since 1984  with consulting and emergency room privileges.  As an avid supporter of the local Mammoth Sharks Swim Team, he has obtained a level one referee and starter status to help run the  swim meets.  The Mammoth Dental Office has always supported the local schools and athletic programs in the community.

Craig is bilingual in English and Spanish and partially fluent in German.

Craig and Christina have two children, Madeleine Murphy Schrager born in 1995 and Malachi Murphy Schrager born in 1998.  Craig and Chrsitina can be found at Tamarack Cross Country ski area in the winter, road biking in the summer and running the local trails at any other times.
